Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Chairman of State Security and Peace Commission of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia H.E. Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan at Tatmadaw Guesthouse in Nay Pyi Taw this morning.
Also present at the call together with the Senior General were SSPC Secretary Joint Executive Chief General Ye Win Oo and SSPC member Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe.
The Malaysian Foreign Minister was accompanied by the Special Envoy of the Rotating Chairman of ASEAN to Myanmar H.E. Tan Sri Othman Has him and officials.
During the discussions, the Malaysian FM expressed pleasure to witness the preparations for the multi-party democracy general election in Myanmar. He said the ASEAN will render cooperation for Myanmar’s endeavours to be the best, saying that he would like to suggest an inclusive election. Election observer teams will also be sent.
In his discussion, the Senior General said it’s a pleasure that the Malaysian Foreign Minister visited Myanmar to hold talks. Myanmar has already informed about the holding of a multiparty democracy general election in 2024. The government made arrangements for the persons with different political views and political parties to have time for preparations and for political parties to register themselves in accord with the law. In the coming election, 57 eligible parties will take part in the election and the number of candidates exceeds 5,000. Peace overtures have been extended for EAOs to join in the political process. Ceasefire announcements were declared 27 times during the time from 2018 to this date. Likewise, persons who are committing terrorist acts due to political disagreements were invited to join in the political process three times. NCA anniversary will be held on 15 this month, and leaders of the NCA signatories, some leaders of non-signatories and international witnesses will take part in it.
Afterward, both sides cordially exchanged views on Myanmar’s political developments, the use of Myanmar electronic voting machines (MEVM), holding a phase-by-phase election, invitation of observer teams from neighbouring countries and international community, Myanmar’s uninterrupted democratization process after the election, Myanmar’s ongoing positive cooperation in the ASEAN and its cooperation in humanitarian aid programs, and promotion in international cooperation.
