Historical records show that the relations between the two countries began 1400 years ago in AD 7th century when the Pyu dynasty of Myanmar and Tang dynasty of China established bilateral trade, economic, cultural and diplomatic relations, and they are going on well throughout the successive period still now. As regards the diplomatic relations, a Myanmar diplomat, Shin Ditha Pamauk, paid a diplomatic visit to China in AD 11th century during the Bagan period, and the visit can be said the cornerstone of today’s policy of peaceful coexistence, both countries are adhering to.
Modern day history shows that Myanmar is the first country to recognize the People’s Republic of China that was establi-shed in 1949; and that the bilateral diplomatic relations between the two, set up on 8 June 1950, have reached the diamond jubilee now.
Mutual goodwill visits between the leaders of the two countries that began in 1950 when the two established bilateral diplomatic relations have gradually strengthened bilateral relations.
The signing of the five principles of peaceful coexistence, based on Myanmar-China history, in 1954 has marked as an example in modern day international relations. It is a pleasure to witness that from the Bandung Conference in 1955 till today, a large number of developing countries are exercising the five principles of peaceful coexistence.
In the sphere of international relations, Myanmar adheres to the “One China Policy.” Hence, the country fully supported China’s entry into the UN as its member in 1971. Myanmar reiterates its stance on “One China Policy”, with a view to further cementing relations between the two countries and assisting regional peace and stability.
Myanmar welcomes and supports the global initiatives of PRC President Xi Jinping — global development initiative, global civilization initiative, global security initiative, global AI initiative as the country sees them as the promoters for peace, stability and sustainable development of the future world.
The two countries upgraded their relations to multiple strategic partnerships in 2011 through people-to-people exchange programs and closer cooperation.
President Xi’s historic visit to Myanmar in 2020 is one of the significant developments in the history of bilateral relations. During the visit, an agreement was reached to set up a Myanmar-China community that shares successes and hardships. It is common knowledge that the said agreement is now firmly delivering advantages to the peoples of both countries.
At this historic moment, Myanmar reconfirms its commitment to join hands with China for greater progress of common goals of the two countries. Moreover, sustainability of P2P common interest and stability and progress in the region will be realized through continued efforts to facilitate the action of establishing a shared Myanmar-China community and prosperity.
During the visit to Moscow, Russia, to attend the 80th Victory Day of the Great Patriotic War in May, 2025, I held talks with Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping. During the meeting we frankly exchange views on promoting bilateral relations, enhancing cooperation in multiple sectors, accelerating the establishment of a community that unites through thick and thin and matters related to regional stability based on genuine friendly relations, mutual trust, and existing sibling relations.
Moreover, during the 8th Summit of the Greater Mekong Sub-region in Kunming, China in November, 2024, I held talks with Chinese Premier Mr. Li Qiang frankly and achieved favourable outcomes.
Myanmar is located at the strategic geographical position in implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor projects. Therefore, it is believed that various opportunities for sustainable prosperity of the people from the two countries will be realized by implementing the project at an early date. I would like to urge all to continue to cooperate to implement the strategic projects and cooperation projects along the CMEC smoothly. I would like to express my appreciation and thanks for good-will support and consistent positive engagement of China towards Myanmar. I would also like to thank China for its support for Myanmar affairs in the international frontier.
I would also like to express gratitude to China for supporting Myanmar’s efforts for the peace process and national reconciliation and peace and development. Such a standpoint reflects the deep and strong friendship and mutual understanding between the two countries.
Another incident that reflects the spirit of sharing in a community that unites through thick and thin of the people of the two countries is the fact that China sent rescue teams within 24 hours after Myanmar was hit by the Mandalay Earthquake on 28 March, 2025. On behalf of the people of Myanmar, I would like to thank the government of China and its rescue teams who ran rescue operations at the golden hour. In 2020, 2021 and 2022, Myanmar was hit hard by worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. I would like to thank China for offering enormous assistance to Myanmar including COVID-19 vaccines and equipment especially for oxygen and oxygen production at that time and contributing a lot to the elimination of COVID-19 among the people of Myanmar.
Moreover, China provided Myanmar with emergency humanitarian aid worth 1.1 billion Yuan for the rehabilitation from the damage caused by the Mandalay Earthquake. As the aid sent by China was the first foreign assistance at the most dif-ficult time, the timely aid was effective and reinforced the strength of the government and the people.
On behalf of the people of Myanmar, I would like to thank the government and people of good neighbourly and friendly China for the timely aid that was offered out of the spirit of siblings. The noble and genuine friendship between the people of the two countries and offering assistance by standing together with the people of Myanmar warmly will go down in the history of the friendship between the two countries.
I would like to reaffirm that Myanmar will work hand in hand with China closely to establish a community that unites through thick and thin based on policies of mutual respect and interests and to deepen the multi-sectoral cooperation for the common interest of the people of the countries.
